FUNDING YOUR STUDY ABROAD
There are many opportunities to fund your study abroad program. For assistance with any of the scholarships below, meet with a Study Abroad Advisor or a staff member from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.
Financial Aid
Any financial aid you currently receive can be used for study abroad, including Pell Grant, Federal Direct Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and PLUS loans), Perkins Loan, HOPE Scholarship, and other scholarships.
It is likely that you will need to cover study abroad expenses upfront and be reimbursed at a later date. Speak with a Financial Aid Advisor for more information.
Scholarships

International Access Scholarship (IAS)
Deadlines:
- Fall programs and Academic Year programs – May 31
- Spring programs (Spring, Spring short-term, Spring Break) - October 31
- Maymester/Summer programs – February 15
Eligibility Requirements:
- Students must be committed to their study abroad program by the scholarship deadline as outlined above each cycle.
- Students participating in faculty-led study abroad programs must pay their initial $300 non-refundable deposit by the scholarship deadline outlined above.
- Students must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at GSU
- Students must be participating in a credit-bearing experience abroad.
- Students must have an established institutional GPA and must be in Good Academic Standing. Transfer and overall GPAs will not be considered.
- Domestic students must have a current FAFSA on file to be considered for financial need.
- Students are eligible to receive one study abroad scholarship per term. If students study abroad more than once, they are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship in subsequent terms.
- International students are eligible to receive the International Access Scholarship, and they will be considered for the base amount associated with their program length.
- Students enrolled in the GSU-62+ program are not eligible.
- Students may not receive scholarship funding that exceeds the cost of their program fee (if applicable).
GSU Department Scholarships

There may be additional scholarship funding available for your experience through one of the various academic departments across campus. To be considered for this additional funding, please complete the GSU General scholarship application linked above. It is highly recommended that you complete as much of the General Application as possible, in order to qualify for multiple university scholarships.

Perimeter College Scholarships

Perimeter College offers merit-based, need-based, and service-based scholarships. All scholarship awards are contingent upon the availability of funds and are subject to revision.
Critical Need Language Award

Apply: The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
CLS is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Applications open in fall.
Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship

FLAS Fellowships assist undergraduate and graduate students in achieving competency in selected foreign languages in combination with international and area studies coursework. FLAS Fellowships are available for the less commonly taught languages of Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian/Farsi, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Funding for French, German, and Spanish languages may be available ONLY for GRADUATE students at an advanced level. French, German and Spanish are NOT eligible languages for UNDERGRADUATE students.
Freeman-ASIA Scholarship Program

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

This scholarship is for Pell Grant recipients studying or interning abroad for credit. Preference is given to students traveling to non-traditional locations and from underrepresented backgrounds. Recipients are required to complete a Follow-on Service Project that promotes international education and the Gilman Scholarship Program at the student's home institution or in their community.
Gilman offers an additional $3,000 for students studying lesser taught languages through it's Critical Need Language Award. Students can apply for this award with their general Gilman application.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship

This scholarship is for child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)

FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be inenrolled at a U.S. college or university
- Receiving credit for their study abroad
- Program must be at least 28 days in length
Boren Scholarship

The David L. Boren National Security Education Program Scholarship (Boren Scholarship) is a federally funded study abroad scholarship designed to encourage career-related skills development in preparation for efforts/activities that would lead to opportunities in federal service. Awards range from up to $25,000 for academic year-long study, up to $10,000 for semester-long study, and up to $8,000 for summer-long study. U.S. citizens enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education wishing to study outside of the U.S. in non-traditional locations during their undergraduate studies and pursue study of a critical need language are eligible to apply.
Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. Recent graduates, graduate students, and young professionals are eligible to apply.
Bridging Scholarship
Apply: Bridging Scholarship
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad. Their study in Japan must last for at least 3 months and must earn credit that will transfer to their home campus in the US.
CIEE Fredrick Douglass Global Fellowship
Apply: The Fredrick Douglass Global Fellowship
This is a unique international program designed to develop change leaders who make an impact on their community and the world. This program is for students of color and selection is in the spirit of Douglass himself with special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding. Award will cover the full cost of travel to and from participation in a four-week, 3-credit study abroad program to Dublin, Ireland. Students who do not receive acceptance into the fellowship will qualify for a $1,500 scholarship for another CIEE study abroad program.
