STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM TYPES

Georgia State Programs

Georgia State University offers a variety of study abroad programs including short faculty-led programs and longer exchange programs.  Students can study abroad for 1 to 3 weeks during Spring Break, Maymester, or Summer on faculty-led programs or for a semester or academic year on an exchange program.  Click on the links below to learn more about the different types of programs available:

Faculty-Led Programs

Georgia State University has partnerships with various universities in multiple countries worldwide. Through these partnerships, GSU will send and receive students internationally for one or two semesters, giving them the opportunity to enroll in a foreign university and to experience immersion into a different culture.

Academics

All courses taken abroad are Georgia State courses and students receive Georgia State credit.

Program Length

Faculty-led programs are usually 1 to 3 weeks and are offered during Maymester, summer, or spring break.

Payments

Students pay Georgia State University tuition & fees, plus a program fee that includes housing, in-country travel, international insurance, and other on-site expenses (varies by program). Program fees will be charged to the student’s PAWs account and will be paid directly to GSU. 

Financial Aid and GSU Study Abroad Scholarships are applicable to this type of program as long as the courses taken are applicable to the student's academic degree path.

Faculty-led programs are ideal for students who

  • Want to take a specific GSU course taught by a GSU professor
  • Can't fit a semester of study abroad into their academic plan
  • Are new to international travel and want more GSU support along their journey

*Faculty-Led programs vary from year to year. A complete listing of all summer programs will usually be available during the Fall semester.  

Exchange Programs

Georgia State University has partnerships with various universities in multiple countries worldwide. Academics

Exchange students enroll in courses at a foreign university and take classes in English or the host university language. Language requirements vary by program.

All course work will be pre-approved by the student's academic advisor and academic department. The courses completed while abroad on the exchange program will be applied to the student’s GSU transcript as transfer credit

Program Length

Students can participate in an exchange program for one semester or one academic year.

Payments

Students will be charged GSU tuition and fees to the student's PAWs account and will be paid directly to GSU.  Housing and living expenses will be paid directly to the host university for most programs.

Exchange Programs are ideal for students who

  • Want to be fully immersed in their host culture
  • May have previously traveled abroad before and are quite independent
  • Are interested in meeting others from all over the world

Georgia State Affiliate Programs

Program Providers & Direct Enroll

Students participating in GSU affiliate third-party programs or direct enrollment programs enroll in courses offered by the program or host university and take classes in English or the program's language. Language requirements vary by program.

  • Need flexibility in their course options and time abroad
  • Value personalized and robust support services like programming, and excursions.
  • Are interested in unique program opportunities.

Direct Enroll options are ideal for students who...

  • Know they want to enroll at a specific university abroad and GSU does not have an exchange program with this institution.
  • Want a budget-friendly option
  • Are independent students who do not need robust support and may have traveled abroad previously.
  • Want to be fully immersed in their host culture.

Academics

For GSU affiliate and direct enroll programs all coursework must be pre-approved by the student's academic advisor and academic department. Credit systems abroad may be different than the US Credit system and it is important to consider that when getting courses approved.  The courses completed while abroad will be applied to the student’s GSU transcript as transfer credit.

Payments

Students pay fees directly to the provider or host institution; students will not pay GSU tuition but will be charged for international insurance via their PAWS account.

International Internships & Independent Studies

International Internships

As a Georgia State student, you may complete an international internship International internships offer the unique opportunity to gain career-related experience in an international setting. Not only can you gain first-hand work experience, but you can learn more about international culture, travel, and develop an international network of fellow professionals.
Many GSU Affiliate Program providers offer international internships.  An alternate way to participate in an international internship is for students to identify opportunities on their own.  This may be done independently or in coordination with a GSU academic department or GSU Faculty member.
Students who are interested in pursuing an international internship for academic credit may also be eligible to use scholarships/financial aid!

Please note: the Study Abroad Programs office does not coordinate or arrange international internships for students.

International Independent Study

As a Georgia State student, you may participate in an independent study course, directed reading, or conduct international research with a GSU faculty member abroad.
